I tend to fill a layer with a light colour, set the layer to 'Multiply' and erase away the fur :)

No problem.
Nah, i use a lightish, greyish purple colour and fill the whole layer (on a clipping mask over the colour layers), set it to multiply then i erase out the highlighted fur areas.
It's more obvious on this one [link] . I use a thicker brush and erase clumps of fur then i make the brush really small and erase individual hairs over the clumps to shape them a bit.
Over the top of the whole drawing (but under the lines) i set a layer to 'Overlay' and use a big soft brush to add nice highlighted colours with a pale orange or yellow, and sometimes (like with the little antelope) i do extra hairs on this layer as detailed highlights C:
